Course Description:

This cutting edge and popular continuing education workshop for professionals who provide services to children & adults with special needs allows a practical opportunity for participants to interact with a sensory integrative occupational therapist and developmental optometrist as they collaborate on the goal of facilitating optimum performance in children with movement and vision issues. Speakers will reveal and clarify some of the mysteries of previously ambiguous performance issues in childhood. Participants will develop a broader net for capturing the subtleties of visual-vestibular behavior by gaining insight into underlying causes. Hands on experience will provide ample opportunities for everyone to learn how to administer a vision screening examination. Comprehensive treatment protocols will be shared so that therapists are exposed to a broad range of practical, innovative, sequential vestibular-visual activities and exercises for use with their clients. A vision screening kit will be available for purchase with registration or at the workshop

This course is not taught by Dr. Sunbeck. It has been highly recommended to Dr. Sunbeck by health care professionals who have attended.

Faculty

 Dr. Stanley A. Appelbaum, OD, FCOVD is a certified Fellow in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. He has been in private practice with his wife, Barbara Bassin, OTR/L, BCP for over 20 years in Bethesda, MD, combining Vision Therapy with Sensory Integration Therapy in the same office. He practices the functional and developmental concepts in his approach to treating vision problems and enhancing vision skills & abilities. He lectures on topics related to infant vision development, visually related learning difficulties, strabismus, amblyopia, the visual demands of computer use and sports vision. Stan has served on the Board of Sensory Integration International and has medical staff privileges at The Maryland Kessler Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital where he treats patients with visual problems associated with brain injury.

Dr. Carl Hillier, OD, FCOVD is a certified Fellow in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. He practices the functional and developmental concepts in his approach to treating vision problems and enhancing vision skills. He lectures on topics related to infant vision development, visually related learning difficulties, the visual demands of computer use and sports vision. Carl founded and directs the San Diego Rehabilitation Institute, a clinic to treat the visual problems associated with brain injury.

Mary Kawar, MS, OTR, a private practitioner in San Diego, Ca. for over 18 years, has specialized in programs for children and adults with learning disabilities. She was director of occupational therapy for 18 years at Children's Hospital in San Diego. Mary has been particularly successful at designing treatment to improve vestibular and ocular motor abilities. She has lectured widely in the area of sensory integration.
